New Jurgens Jindabyne pops up

words - Chris Fincham
Jurgens kicks of a 2013 model blitz with a new entry-level pop-top aimed at thrifty couples with smaller tow vehicles

Jurgens Australia has released a new, entry-level pop-top model to add to its expanding range of lightweight, Euro-style caravans.

Priced from $34,990 (towaway, NSW), the new Jindabyne model re-introduces a budget-priced, pop-top model to Jurgens’ local caravan line-up, which now includes five models including the recently introduced 23ft, twin axle Tooradin flagship.

While cheaper by around $8000 than Jurgens’ previous entry level model, the 17ft Sungazer, the new 5.52m (18ft 2in) Jindabyne misses out on an ensuite and a few other features fitted standard to Jurgens’ other vans.

At 6.34m long (overall) the new pop-top is slightly longer than the compact Sungazer, but 40cm lower in overall height so should squeeze into more garages. The pop-top roof also gives the Jindabyne 12cm more headroom (2.03m internal height) than the fixed-roof Sungazer.

With a Tare weight of 1300kg, 1600kg ATM and ball weight of approximately 110kg, the Jindabyne is designed to be towed by a range of smaller tow vehicles.

Two layout options are currently available: the two-berth PT2210 layout features a 1.9m x 1.5m, north-south double bed at the front, lounge/dinette with swivel table in the middle, and a large, kitchen/bench area that runs down one side as well as across the rear.

The three to four berth PT2230 layout features a dinette/lounge up front, which converts to a bed for one adult or two children; small, centrally-located kitchen and double bed at the rear.

Apart from the unique, one-piece aluminium skin, pop-top roof, the Jindabyne is of similar construction to Jurgens’ fixed-roof range, including moulded front and rear panels, composite walls, double glazed windows, alloy wheels, independent suspension and galvanised chassis. It also comes with a three year factory warranty.

Standard features include two 4.5kg gas bottles, 60 litre water tank, double pillowtop innerspring mattress, 94 litre three-way fridge, microwave, stove/griller, rangehood, LED lighting, CD/MP3 radio player, and an on-board battery.

Interior finishings extend to blinds/flyscreens on all windows and doors, window pelmets, and floor and wall coverings that are both hard wearing and washable.

Options available (some are fitted as standard to the ‘Deluxe’ version) include a roll-out awning, external picnic table, travel blanket, air-conditioning, curtains, 12V 22inch TV, 240V hot water service and flickmixer tap running off 12V or mains pressure.

Like the rest of Jurgens’ Aussie range, the new Jindabyne will be built at the company’s  brand new $5 million factory in Pakenham, Victoria, which opened this month.

Jurgens Caravans’ managing director Terry Steel, said the new model roll-out is set to continue this year, including a smaller 13ft version of the Jindabyne pop-top, plus more variations of the range-topping Tooradin.

Also expected later this year is a range of toy haulers, followed by new motorhomes and camper trailers.

While no Jurgens caravans will be on display at this week’s South Australian Caravan, Camping and Outdoor Adventure Show, Jurgens' South Australian dealer Dave Benson Caravans should have a few on offer at its annual eight day sale, which runs from February 19-26 and includes special offers on all 11 RV brands at its Kilburn dealership.
